Self Portrait

Concept

Self Portrait is a profoundly personal artwork featuring a plaster cast of the artist's torso. The cast is coated with graphite and placed in the kiln with a pigmented sheet of glass ready to be slumped. The result is a powerful representation of vulnerability and resilience.

This piece explores the interconnectedness of purity and impurity as integral to one's essence.I attempt to reconcile with fragmented memories by giving physical form to disassociated forces. My exploration delves into the depths of transparency within my being, contemplating revelations when the material becomes transparent, offering insight into the human experience.

Inspired by Rachel Whiteread, who uses methods such as "lost form casting" to encapsulate temporal evidence and trap traces of time and memory, I, too, employ casting techniques to symbolize the fleeting connection between the original object and its cast. Casting activates the space of memory, inviting contemplation of absence and presence, which informs my own exploration of materiality and memory.
